Musician ‘Sum-01’ needed an eye-catching and professional album artwork design, wordmark, and brand image for the project “Makin’ Moves.”
The album artwork needed to reflect the collaborative relationship between artists from London, Ontario, and the record label, Black Buffalo Records, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
This project needed design layouts created for a nationwide release of the album on vinyl, compact disc, cassette, and wearable merchandise.
I was provided with images from a photoshoot with SUM-01 that depicted a car and a boom box. This imagery along with the album title inspired the theme of movement.
I created the wordmark from a font inspired by vintage funk music albums. The DJs on the project often sample funk records in their music and I wanted to wordmark to reflect the artist’s style of Hip Hop. The continuous flow of the lines in the wordmark compliment the movement theme.
I sourced a royalty-free image of the Halifax skyline and collaged this with images of Sum-01, the car, circular shapes to resemble a record, and subtle light trails that blend the composition.
The colours in the scene are inspired by sunrise, as if the artist had been on a long, overnight journey and is parking here to finally rest and enjoy the view. This is symbolic of SUM-01’s personal journey as a musician.
The album artwork was assembled with supplied text and logos to the print layout specifications.
SUM-01’s Makin’ Moves EP was released on July 3, 2020, through Black Buffalo Records on a limited edition 12” vinyl, CD, cassette, and t-shirt.
